For years unnumbered, the meeting of dwarves and elves was few and far between.
Their animosities rising to the surface inevitably like seafoam on the tide.
Few remained long enough after such ferocities were drawn to the surface. Their simmering sending fear of any great conflict rippling. No, it had been best to avoid one another.
Now, the battle won and the One Ring destroyed, their stood, seemingly miraculously, a dwarf and elf side by side, ready to cross the remainder of the bridge, of their peoples many misgivings.
They had crossed all manner of terrain together, fought and bickered but their mission to save their beloved world stood in the balance, so they stayed the course.
And in doing so, they had discovered what lurked beneath them was a fear of their differences, of grudges not their own and long held unappreciation of what they could each offer. They did not need to be enemies and live out the same cycle of anger and separation so many years had suffered.
The waters that teemed were no match to their shared curiosity, spirit for sport and love of this worlds people. And so, they crossed, step to step, the gap that bridged their peoples for years, and years.
“A fine day, Legolas” Gimli began.
“A fine day, Gimli.” Legolas responded. “For an adventure. Let us see these caves you’ve spoken so reverently of.”
And so, they ventured. Through mountain high and low, dwarf and elf strode side by side with no bitterness standing between them. And their battle waged no more.
For many years the two ventured not as beings once foes, but true friends, as all would say who met them.
