Characters: Legolas, Pippin, & Frodo…. With a tiny appearance by Aragorn & Gandalf
It was starting to get stuck in his head… that song… that simple hummed melody. Legolas sighed slightly, glancing at the small Hobbit who was walking between himself and Aragorn. Pippin had been humming the self-same song for most of the evening… and at first it was a welcome break from the labored Dwarven breaths that Legolas’ keen ears picked up behind them as Gimli trudged along. It distracted him from the clinking of Gandalf’s staff upon rock and grass… from the shifting sound of Boromir as he adjusted the shield slung over one shoulder…
At least Aragorn knew how to walk silently… and, for the most part, the Hobbits as well… Pippin’s song not withstanding of course.
But as the night wore on, for the Fellowship traveled in the dark most days in such lands, that song started to worm its way into Legolas’ mind as well.
Stopping just before dawn, the prince crouched down beside Peregrin as the young Hobbit unfurled his bedroll and finally, well, just asked.
“What is it you have been humming all through our march?” Legolas ventured, his blue gaze keen on the smaller being beside him.
Blinking, Pippin looked up, rather startled that Legolas had seemingly just appeared right there. “Humming? Oh, I’m terribly sorry if it was irritating. I just hate walking in silence.” He admitted, though not quite answering.
Legolas frowned, “But what is it? I have never heard it’s like before… and songs are usually quite familiar to Elven ears as we compose many of our own.” He admitted, knowing for a fact that these Hobbits had indeed enjoyed the company of many an Elven bard, such as Lindir, at the Last Homely House ere their journey began.
“Frodo taught it to me in my tweens.” Pippin replied, his hands busy stretching out the bedroll as he spoke.
Then… he started to sing…
“Over the river and through the woods, to Thranduil’s Halls we go.
We don’t know the way, the path’s a delay, bare ground with leaves under toe.
Over the river and through the woods. Oh, how my sword does sing.
It stings the eyes and bites the thighs of each foul spiderling.
Over the river and through the woods, to dungeons deep and dark.
Elf barrels of wine will make a good time…”
Suddenly Frodo’s hand clamped down over Pippin’s mouth, muffling the next set of lyrical words. “Very sorry about this…” the Hobbit spoke, blushing in embarrassment. “It… well… you see…”
Legolas crouched there, a look of complete bewilderment on his fair features. For a moment, the prince seemed to contemplate those words, but then he smiled softly.
“I see… Master Bilbo must have made a song out of his journeys to tell you.” Standing, the Elf’s smile turned to a full grin. “I must say, I think it has grown on me, Master Baggins. Do not be ashamed of such word play… even if it does entail one of my realm’s less than savory moments in this world’s long history.” Legolas teased before deciding to sit down instead and crossed his legs under him, looking at the two Hobbits. “Do teach me the rest, hmm?”
As Pippin and Frodo began to tell Legolas the rest of the words, Gandalf, who had been listening to the entire affair, sighed slightly. One arched eyebrow from Aragorn caused the wizard to relay his thoughts.
“To think that Thranduil’s son can make such fast friends with these Hobbits…”
But Estel laughed then, shaking his head. “Oh, he is not merely making friends, Mithrandir…” a knowing grin appeared on the man’s face. “He means to relate this song, in full… much to Thranduil’s own chagrin, no doubt.”
Gandalf’s own grin matched that of the man. “Ah… he really is ever the troublemaker…” the wizard said, watching the scene fondly.

Author's Note: Song Pippin sings is to the tune of the Christmas/Thanksgiving song, “Over the River and Through the Woods”.
