The time is finally here.
For a full night and a day, I have heard them approach. Their whispering and careful footsteps have slowly grown louder and clearer. It was hard to find out where the sound came from in the beginning. Sound changes down here. It is warped when it echoes through the tunnels, and it is easy to be confused. I have learned the ways here, and my long wait will soon be over.
I can smell them now. The smell of Dwarf is already familiar to me, it still lingers at some places in these mines. Did the Dwarf-king send a spy? I can smell Men, and what disgusts me most is the sickening sweet smell of Elf. What could have brought it here? I need to stay calm. Only a little closer, and I will see them from my hiding place in the shadow.
They sleep now, less than a hundred steps from me. There are nine of them, and only one awake. The Elf watches calmly. His awful bright eyes are fixed on something in a side tunnel on the other side. One step, one more, my hand reaches slowly for the dagger in my belt. The Dwarf will bring only death back to the Lonely Mountain, the Men will be an easy match. I just need to close those bright Elf-eyes first! One step, one more, quickly while he is distracted...I\'ll claim those strange ears as a trophy for myself, I'll put out that unnatural, sickening light! I, Bûzog, will be a hero, the great scout who single-handedly killed an Elf! One step...
No! Quicker than my own thought, the Elf turns around. I freeze, with my dagger ready, prepared to meet the hatred in those horrible eyes with my own ice-cold will. It looks at me, and I see not hatred, but disgust and pity! Pity! For me! Rage overwhelms me, and I raise my weapon and charge. Elven steel meets me, as bright and terrible as their eyes, and all light fades from the world.
