Rating: PG-13; warning for disturbing imagery
With me in the far desert place, There walk tortured years That, with constant swords, Cut into my thirsted core.
In the far desert place, Many leagues from hearth and home, I saw a reflected creature, Naked and bestial and fierce, Who, writhing upon the hot sand, Held my heart in hand, And ate of it.
In that far desert place,
Though my chest burned,
I asked, ‘Is it good, dark friend?’
Across the far desert place, The creature stared, And, dripping my blood, it answered: ‘It is sour—sour on my tongue. But I like it Because it is sour, And because it is my heart.’
