This was written for the June teitho challenge: Father and Son. This story was meant to depict the bond between Elrond and Estel when he was only six, Estel I mean. As a foster father to a rambunctious young boy, Elrond had to play many roles. Father, caretaker, disciplinarian, find-the-missing-Estel-er , and perhaps most importantly, a teacher.
As the company approached Rivendell and agitated Elrond rode out to meet them. "Legolas, Elladan, Elrohir? Are you alrigh- what happened to Elrohir?"
Elladan glanced down sadly at his unconscious younger twin, "Spiders and Orcs ada, we were escorting Legolas-"
"Which, I might add," said Legolas butting in, "I do not need any more Lord Elrond!"
"Anyway," continued Elladan, ignoring Legolas, "We were almost out of Mirkwood when Spiders attacked, Elrohir got a small bite but nothing else. Once we were out of the woods a band of orcs attacked us, Legolas got a small nick across the arm and forehead, I got one across my leg and Elrohir a cut across his chest! Shouldn't be anything too life threatening but......ummm"
"Elladan!"
"Before we left Elrohir already had a slight fever so it might be a bit worse than it-"
"Elladan! Why did you not inform me, you know elves don't fall ill like mortals! And no, you wanting to see Legolas was not a valid reason, pass me Elrohir, we shall have to make haste for Imladris. We still have an hour yet to go and I have none of my healing supplies with me."
After taking the unconscious Elrohir from Elladan's tired hands. He gestured for the horses to proceed the four rode back to Rivendell in silence. As they rode Elrond had time to think, so they had been ambushed by not one, but two bands of the fell creatures, if the situation hadn't been so serious he would have laughed. Suddenly a thought occurred to Elrond, "Oh valar," he said more to himself then the others, "what will we tell Estel?"
" I'd forgotten about that," Legolas said thoughtfully, " I suppose he has never seen his brothers unconscious or injured beyond a cut or bruise?"
"No," Sighed Elrond, "I shall have to ride ahead and inform him, Legolas take Elrohir, do not argue with me Elladan!"
Passing on his burden, Elrond urged his horse to a speed he would never dare reach if he had a wounded elf with him. At his break neck pace Elrond was back in Imladris in 15 minutes, vaulting off his horse he almost ran to the gardens, where he knew the six year old toddler would be.
As predicted Estel was in the garden running in circles and singing a song he had evidently just made up. As Elrond neared the spot where Estel played he briefly ran over what he was going to say to the innocent child. "Estel," Elrond called once he was within earshot, "come sit with me." Delighted Estel skipped over to the bench and plopped himself onto the bench next to his ada. "What is it ada?" came Estel's soft, innocent, child-like voice.
"Well, ion-nin, you know 'Ro and 'Dan left to pick up Las right?" Elrond asked using Estel's nicknames for the elves.
"Yes..." scrunching his face in concentration Estel continued, "are they here ada? Can I see them?!"
"Yes they are coming soon, they have almost arrived. And I know this will upset you but, but I must tell you, Estel and please don't be to upset, I know you are stil young b-"
"Adaaaaaa," whined Estel, "get to the poooooooint!"
"Ok, ok Estel," continued Elrond, "Your brothers and Legolas are almost here but Elrohir is injured."
"Injured? Was it the er-er-erksh? Or the s-p-ydahrs?" Asked Estel, mispronouncing the words magnificently.
"Both Estel, please do not interrupt, yes he was injured and is now unconscious and I do not know how bad it is."
Estel seemed supremely uncaring, he jumped up he then asked Elrond if there was anything else he wanted to say.
"B-B-But Estel," stammered Elrond, shocked at his sons blaze attitude, "did you hear what I said? That your brother was injured and unconscious!?"
"Of course ada, but he'll be fine right? Like in all the old stories, the elves are super strong and they are invincible!" Picking up a stick Estel proceeded to swing it around in circles like it was a sword.
"Estel," said Elrond in a caring voice, "Elves are immortal but not invincible, we can die."
Estel froze mid-swing and promptly toppled over, "W-what ada? Elves can die? Glory and 'Restor never said that!" his bottom lip was beginning to tremble, "Is 'Ro going to die? I d-d-don't want him to die!"
Elrond reached out and pulled Estel into an embrace, "Yes, we can die but not of old age, only of wounds and heart break. Yes we can die but not so easily Estel, your brother is injured but I don't think he will die, in fact I know he won't, I just want to prepare you and tell you that 'Ro won't be able to play with you for awhile."
What Elrond said was not a complete truth and he knew it, there was a high chance that Elrohir would be alright, but nothing was certain. However, this was his darling toddler you were talking about, Elrond would do anything to keep him happy and safe.
"R-really ada?" asked Estel, whipping his runny nose.
"Yes Estel."
Thus it was a grim but prepared Elrond who waited for the trio at the gates of Imladris. And safely in his room was a better informed and slightly less care free Estel.

Aragorn sighed as he thought about his foster father, the elf he would never see again. That lesson, though not his first was also not his last. Elrond was his mentor, his ada, his father. And also his teacher.
