"A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities."
- J.R.R. Tolkien
Though we have passed the summer solstice, it is still the season (in the Northern Hemisphere at least!) to consider Mid-Summer Night's Dreams. Dreams are so potent, whether in the mundane world, or that of Tolkien, that it seemed fitting to make "Dreams" our August Teitho Challenge theme.
For "Dreams" can be so rich! There can be aspirations, fervent hopes, goals within dreams, or phantasmagorical fantasy and illusion. There can be figments of imagination or potentially frightening visions. "Dreams" can just as easily be nightmares, reliving old wounds or imagining the worst for the future. In the world of Tolkien, dreams hold also prophetic power.
Are Elven dream different from the dreams of Men? When running after the Orcs through the plains of Rohan, Legolas "could sleep, if sleep it could be called by Men, resting his mind in the strange places of elvish dreams, even as he walked open-eyed in the light of this world". What did he dream about? What about Faramir's returning dream about a great wave, or the dreams of hobbits in the house of Tom Bombadil?
We could find Aragorn dreaming of his coronation, or of his confrontation at the Black Gate. We could hear of Legolas' dreams of sailing West when the strife is finished. Dreams of children, of lovers, of loss, and of triumph. We invite you to share your Middle Earth dreams.
