Greetings, friend! Perhaps you have just discovered Teitho and this is the first topic that you read. Or perhaps you have stumbled across the contest years ago and have been a loyal reader or writer ever since, or maybe you are a returning old friend. Whatever the case, you probably remember the moment you “met” us for the first time – the first stories you read here, the first challenges you wrote or voted for. And thanks to these first impressions, you are still with us here today. Whenever we discover something new, the first impressions take deep roots in our hearts and minds and are hard to change. Whenever we meet a new person, the first meeting can shape how our relationship with them develops. Our topic for August is “First Meetings”.
“First Meetings” stories are so beloved and popular that you can see a “first meetings” tag in many fanfiction archives. What makes this type of tales so appealing is that it is always interesting to see how a great friendship develops from the very beginning. Many Aragorn and Legolas friendship writers have tried their hands in at least one (and often more) first meeting stories. And even though so many scenarios have been explored, there are still many possibilities left, and many questions remain unanswered. When did they meet for the first time? Was it at the Council of Elrond, or when Aragorn delivered Gollum to Mirkwood, or was it decades before that, like so many authors love to imagine? Where did they meet? We know that Aragorn has travelled to many strange places, but we know practically nothing of Legolas’s past, so it is all left to the author’s imagination. Under what circumstances did they meet? Did their friendship start smoothly, or were there hostility and misunderstandings at first? Tell us your theory on these questions and make us believe it!
Other possible meetings that could make good stories include Elladan and Elrohir meeting baby Aragorn for the first time, young Estel visiting the Rangers for the first time and meeting Halbarad (before or after he had learnt his true identity), Thorongil meeting Denethor, Aragorn’s first conversation with Boromir, or later with Faramir, the Hobbits’ first impressions of Strider, Legolas meeting Gimli, or perhaps meeting Haldir centuries ago. And even though the first meeting of Arwen and Aragorn is already beautifully described in the Appendices, perhaps you can expand it.
Naturally, Aragorn or Legolas do not need to be in the pair of main characters. You could write about Bilbo first meeting Gandalf, or Gollum, or about Elrond meeting Glorfindel, or perhaps Elrond meeting Galadriel and Celeborn – how did Celebrían introduce her parents to their future son-in-law? And how and when did she meet Elrond for the first time? And what about Legolas’s parents? Or Gilraen and Arathorn?
The first meeting can be with an animal. Perhaps one of our heroes received a present – a dog or a horse, that turned into a loyal friend. We already know about Roheryn, and perhaps there were others as well. Or perhaps Legolas once met a wild animal in the woods – a wolf, or a bear, or perhaps an eagle – who helped him in a time of need and who later met him again as a friend. And considering the great role trees play in Middle-earth, perhaps the first meeting of one of our heroes with a certain tree can be no less important.
