There was a quiet, summer night over the hidden valley of Imladris.
‘Do I have to go to bed now?’
Gilraen looked up from her sewing at the bright face of her seven-year-old son and sighed.
‘Yes, Estel. It is a proper time for you to sleep.’
‘But Ada…’
‘He promised to come, so he will’ assured Gilraen. ‘There is nothing to worry about.’
‘I’d love to hear just another of these wonderful stories he can tell.’
‘You must be patient, my child. Master Elrond has a lot work to do tonight’ explained Gilraen calmly.
There was a soft rapping at the door. Gilraen stood up.
‘Please, come in’ she said.
‘Has someone just mentioned me?’ asked familiar warm and gentle voice.
‘Ada!’ exclaimed Estel happily. He ran to his father and hugged him tightly. ‘Will you tell me a story?’
‘Maybe. But I have also another idea. We have such a beautiful warm evening that I thought that, perhaps, with Nana’s permission we could go out for a while and watch the stars together’.
‘Nana, please, may I go?’ begged the boy.
Gilraen sighed softly. She knew that to her host the stars had a special meaning.
‘Go, my son’ she said.
‘We will be back soon’ promised Elrond and took Estel’s hand.
They left interior of the house and sat on the stairs leading to the main entrance. Then Elrond picked up the boy and placed him on his lap.
‘Ada, there are so many of them’ said Estel excitedly, pointing at the nocturnal sky.
‘Can you name any?’ asked Elrond, hugging the boy gently.
‘Yes’ answered the child with pride. ‘The biggest and brightest of them is Earendil, your Ada’s star.
‘That is correct’ stated the Half-elven and brushed his lips lovingly through Estel’s soft hair.
For a while they sat in silence
‘Why we actually love the stars?’ asked the child suddenly.
‘Just imagine a night entirely without light’ responded Elrond. ‘Would you like to be outdoors, sitting in the darkness, then?’
‘Rather not. But there are many lightless nights’ noticed Estel.
‘That’s true’ agreed the Half-elven. ‘but the starlight helps us in many ways. It makes us feel safer when we are outdoors, and enlightens paths covered in shadows, protecting people from getting lost. Also it’s very important to travelers, who are wandering to their destination, for if they know the stars good enough, they can figure out direction they are heading in’.
‘Do you think Dan and Ro use the stars to find the right way, too?’ –asked the boy curiously.
Elrond laughed
‘I’m quite sure they do’ he replied. ‘They had learnt the lesson I gave them very long ago.’
‘What lesson?’ demanded Estel immediately.
‘Look back at Earendil’ said Elrond softly, smiling mysteriously. ‘and try to remember what I’ ll tell you now. It’s very important: Wherever you will go in the future, when you are grown, this star will be your friend. The starlight shall be your guide and you’ll never get lost if you follow it. It’ll protect you from the darkness and help you to find your way back home, to me, to your brothers and to all those who love you.’
‘Really?’
‘Really’ the Half-Elven nodded gravely. ‘And there is one more thing. Have you ever heard the other name of my Ada’s star? ‘
‘No’ the boy shook his head ‘At least I don’t remember’
‘I think you’ll like it, then’ smiled Elrond. “It’s also called Gil-Estel’
‘Almost like me’ giggled the child.
‘Yes, indeed. But this name hadn’t been given without reason. It means that the Star of High Hope can bring comfort to those who are saddened.’
‘Ada’ the boy turned his head to glance at his father ‘ Am I named Estel because of this star?’
Elrond smiled.
‘Maybe’ he said. ‘I’ve never thought about that this way. But for sure you are my hope, Estel’
For a while they fell silent, looking at glimmering points at the nocturnal sky; finally Estel yawned.
‘Enough watching for one evening, my little one’ stated Elrond, standing up with the child in his arms. ‘It’s growing quite late’.
‘I’m not little and I’m not tired’ protested the boy. ’And I don’t need to be carried like a baby!’
Elrond didn’t respond, smiling gently, and kissing the crown of Estel’s hair.
‘Something is telling me that your Nana will be very angry with us, if we delay even for a moment longer.’ he said teasingly. ‘And I won’t be surprised if she doesn’t allow me to take you out next time’.
‘All right. You won’. stated the child grimly.
‘If we are in agreement,’ Elrond began. ’let’s go back into the house and then we shall visit your bedchamber’.
The child only nodded wearily and Master of Rivendell smiled gently again.
By the time they climbed up the stairs leading to Gilraen’s and Estel’s quarters, the boy had slipped into a peaceful slumber.
