This month, our theme was suggested to us by a reader and participant. We always welcome suggestions for themes, and are delighted to use them!
The theme for October and November will be Legacy, which was suggested to us by Sonja. Much of the following write up is theirs as well. Thank you, Sonja, for the theme and for laying it out so well!
A legacy can be understood as something from history that is left from this earlier time in the present. It means more or less "What is left behind by the people or events that went before us"
In Middle Earth, this could be many things.
What is left of the race of elves a hundred years after the ring bearers have sailed? A thousand? Or of the dwarves?
More than these races, what would be retained of the knowledge they had accrued? Of their crafts and skills?
A legacy can also be left by individuals. Elrond, for example, who had lived in Middle Earth since the first age and into the fourth. How did he influence those ages? What events would have turned out differently had he not been there? What might he have taken with him on that final trip to the Grey Havens, and what did he leave behind for his children?
What legacy might Eowyn have left in the Riddermark after riding to war and defeating the Witch-King? Did other young women decide to follow in her example and become Shieldmaidens?
Did more Tooks and Bradybucks go on adventures outside the Shire, following Pippin and Merry's example?
An legacy can also be an inheritance, an item passed from one generation to another.
What might a young boy in Harad inherit from his father, who answered Sauron's call to war and never returned?
Aragorn famously inherited the Ring of Barahir and the Sceptre of Annuminas, legacies from his royal ancestors. Might he also have less well-known items that he received from his father, or his mother, that he carried with him on his travels or kept stored safely in Imladris?
If you would like to illustrate either of these stories, you can take part in our special all-year-round artistic challenge!
