In winter, the nights are long and when the Sun rises, it stays low in the sky, creating long shadows. That's why also our January topic is Shadow.
The shadow can be literal, a place where the light does not fall because something stands in its path. It can be welcome especially in a hot day, or as a hiding place if you have the need to hide. In the mataphorical sense though, shadows are something negative, a sense of menace and impending doom:
Over the land there lies a long shadow, westward reaching wings of darkness.
- that's a verse from Malbeth's prophecy about the Army of the Death. The threat of Sauron has been perceived as a shadow over the land. Tolkien also considered writing a sequel to the Lord of the Rings, titled "The New Shadow". He abandoned the idea, but you could build upon it. It can be also some event in the past that casts shadow upon the life of the characters in your story - the death of Legolas' mother or some dark memory from Aragorn's journeys, maybe. Or they can be in someone's shadow, like Denethor overshadowed by Thorongil. The symbolical meanings are numerous with this topic, and we hope your inspiration will be as well.
