His longing for what has been set aside as Frodo’s is so intense that it gives him no peace. Pippin considers Frodo to be a fine person, a great person for the responsibility he has assumed, but is it really fair for him to have it all? Frodo does not need any more, surely. It is not temptation he feels, Pippin assures himself. It is concern for his cousin’s welfare. Frodo has had too much already. It would be a kindness, really, to relieve him of it.
So the youngest hobbit waits until the other eight members of the company, especially Aragorn, are all busy with other things and no one is looking in his direction. Frodo is lying down; he seems to have fallen asleep. Quietly, Pippin moves in the direction of his older cousin, obsessed with his goal. He arrives at Frodo’s side. Stealthily, he reaches down, intent on helping himself…
Sam’s voice rings out, jarring the youngest hobbit and bringing his attempt at theft to an instantaneous halt. “Mr. Pippin! Stay out of Mr. Frodo’s pack, and leave the last of those mushrooms alone! I said I’m going to cook them up for Mr. Frodo’s breakfast tomorrow!”
