“Legolas!”
Legolas looked up and laid down his papers. He looked behind him and saw his father approaching him.
“Yes, ada?” he asked.
“Where are the papers?” Thranduil asked. He sounded very angry, but and Legolas knew why.
“Right here, ada,” Legolas responded politely.
“Are they finished?”
Legolas shook his head. “No, ada,” he said. “I’m not finished yet.”
“And why not, if I may ask?” Legolas didn’t dare to look at his father. “I’m sorry ada,” he said. “But I’m really busy. Remember I also have to go on patrol every day?”
“I don’t care,” Thranduil said and sat down next to his son. “You know that darkness is falling over Mirkwood.”
Legolas nodded. “Yes, ada,” he said. “We have to work hard,” Thranduil continued. “We have to do the best we can.”
Legolas sighed. “Ada, I’m trying, but I…”
“No buts,” Thranduil said. “I want you to have this finished in two hours.”
“Or else?” Legolas asked.
“Or else?” Thranduil repeated. “Or else you can continue working in the night.”
“But…”
“No, that’s enough,” Thranduil said. “I don’t want to hear another word.” And then he left.
Legolas sighed and looked at his work. He had already done a quite big part, but he was not finished yet. He still had some more hours of work. But the problem was that he didn’t have time. He didn’t have enough time.
He yawned. He felt so tired. But he couldn’t sleep now. No, he had to finish this. And tomorrow, in the early morning, he had to go out on patrol again. He sighed and continued writing. He didn’t know for how long he could go on like this.
The next morning Legolas woke up with a horrible feeling. He didn’t want to go on patrol today. But that was his duty. He was a prince, so he couldn’t just neglect his duties.
Realizing he was already late, Legolas started running through the corridor. “Legolas!” someone shouted. Legolas turned around.
“Good morning ada,” he said. “Shouldn’t you be eating breakfast first? “ Thranduil asked.
“No time for that!” Legolas said and ran away. He was so late, he hoped the patrol hadn’t left yet. Fortunately they hadn’t. Once he arrived, he saw the patrol was already ready to leave.
“Wait!” Legolas said. “I’m here!”
“My lord, there you are,” Amras said. “We were waiting for you.”
“I’m sorry,” Legolas apologized. “Why were you late?”
“I slept too long,” Legolas responded. “I fell asleep lately yesterday.”
“Then you should sleep earlier.”
“I can’t,” Legolas said. “I have work to do. I hate being a prince.”
Amras sighed. “Come on,” he said as the patrol started walking. “Let’s go.”
A few hours later when Legolas didn’t think he could go any further, they stopped walking. “Legolas, are you alright?” Amras asked him, as he saw how tired Legolas looked.
“I’m fine, Amras,” Legolas responded tiredly. “Perhaps you should go home,” the elf suggested.
But Legolas stubbornly shook his head. “No, I think I can stay,” he lied. “I’m already feeling better.”
But actually he wasn’t feeling better. No, he felt horrible. He just wanted to go home now and finish his paper works. Every day he would arrive lately, so he didn’t have enough time for his work. And that caused him to stay up for almost the rest of the night.
“If you really have so much work to do, you really should go home,” Amras suggested. “I can’t,” Legolas protested. “Ada wants me to do it, it’s my duty as a prince to do the work.”
“Legolas, you’re too tired to go on patrol,” Amras said. “If we get attacked by spiders you’re dead.”
Legolas sighed. “I know,” he said. “I’ve already talked to my father, but he would not listen.”
“Legolas, I know that we’re almost done for today,” Amras said. “But you really should go home to finish other things. Talk to your father, he will understand.”
“He won’t understand,” Legolas said.
Amras sighed. “Legolas, you look exhausted. Just go home and have some rest, alright?”
Legolas nodded and sadly walked back to the palace. Yes, he really wanted to continue his work, but he also didn’t want to leave the Guard in the forest. But Amras wanted him to go home, so yes, that was what he was going to do now.
Once he arrived at the palace, he met his father.
“What are you doing here?” Thranduil asked. “Amras sent me back,” Legolas explained.
“Why?” Thranduil asked. “Did something happen?”
Legolas shook his head. “No, ada,” he responded. “Nothing happened.”
“Then why are you not outside?”
“I wanted to continue my work,” Legolas responded, afraid of how his father would react.
Thranduil sighed. “You can do your work in the evening, remember?”
“Yes, ada,” Legolas said. “But I have no time in the evening, which causes me to stay awake late, which makes me very tired.”
“Then you should work harder.”
“Ada, I’m already working as hard as I can!” Legolas protested.
Thranduil sighed. “Fine, just do your work then,” he said. “But tomorrow you will go outside again.”
“Yes, ada,” Legolas said sadly and walked towards his room. There he sat down on his chair and started writing. He had to hurry if he wanted a good sleep tonight. But he started feeling dizzy when he started reading. Soon after he felt his eyes slowly closing and without realizing it he fell asleep.
Suddenly some hands shook him. Legolas woke up immediately and looked at who was doing that. “Ada,” Legolas said in shock.
“Legolas, why are you sleeping?” Thranduil asked.
“I…,” Legolas said. “I fell asleep accidentally. I’m sorry ada, it won’t happen again.”
Thranduil stared at his son. “Legolas…,” he said. He then realized what a mistake he had made. For weeks now he had forced his son to do so many things at the same time. So many things that he had no time left for sleeping and things like that.
“Legolas, I’m so sorry,” he said.
“For what?” Legolas asked confused.
“For this,” Thranduil said. “It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have asked so many things of you.”
“Ada, I’m fine, really,” Legolas said.
“Legolas, I’m sorry but I shouldn’t have sent you to the Guard every day and make you doing your paper works at the same day. I should have known it was too much.”
“Ada, it wasn’t your fault,” Legolas said. “It’s my fault you don’t have enough time for sleeping. Ion nin, you look exhausted.”
Legolas sighed. “Ada…,” he said, but Thranduil was first. “Legolas, why don’t you get some sleep?”
“But what about…?” Legolas looked at the papers. “Just leave that to me,” Thranduil said.
“Ada, are you sure that…?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” Thranduil said. “How could I have been so stupid?” He helped Legolas, who could barely walk so tired he was, to his bed.
“Here, just get some sleep, ion nin,” Thranduil said. “I won’t wake you, alright?”
Legolas gave a small smile. “Thank you ada,” he said. “Now, I won’t make you going on patrols all the time anymore, and you’ll get less work to do here. Is that better?”
Legolas nodded. “Thank you, ada,” he said again. “So, you have more time for yourself now,” Thranduil said, but Legolas had already fallen asleep. Now Thranduil understood how difficult this had been for Legolas. His own son. His own son didn’t even have time for sleeping.
Thranduil smiled as he watched his son sleeping. He was so proud of him. “Good night, ion nin,” he whispered before walking away.
“Legolas!”
Legolas looked up and laid down his papers. He looked behind him and saw his father approaching him.
“Yes, ada?” he asked.
