Gems and Jewels
As fall reaches its peak, and the leaves begin to lose their bright colors and call, we find the holiday season is rushing towards us, when many of us around the world will exchange gifts with loved ones. How many of those gifts might include gems and jewels of some kind? That will be our theme for November and December.
While gems and jewels can be used in many different ways by different cultures, or even different classes within a culture, there are examples of their importance in Middle Earth.
Eomer and Gimli took refuge in the glittering caves, Aglarond, during the battle at Helm's Deep, and even Legolas was left unable to describe them when he and Gimili traveled there together.
Thorin was obsessed with finding the Arkenstone when he returned to Erebor with his company, as Smaug had been with creating his glittering armor from the other jewels the dwarves had mined there.
Sam's Gaffer scoffed at the notion of there being tunnels at Bag End packed with gold and jools.
Each of the three rings of power forged by Celebrimbor was set with it's own distinctive jewel.
Gems and jewels needn't be pieces of crystal that have been mined from the ground and shaped to reflect and capture light!
A hobbit lad might say that a pretty lass he fancies is a gem among hobbits.
A doting father in Harad might say that his daughters are the jewels of his house.
A young ranger sitting around a campfire and boasting with his friends might crack jokes at the quality of their family jewels.
All authors consider our stories to be jewels, precious and valuable beyond their physical value. We hope that you will be willing to share your gems with us by December 31 so they can be admired, and so your craft can be honed and polished until it shines!
