Summary: Aragorn recounts the moment they laid Boromir to rest. (Book universe, influenced by the lament sung by Aragorn and Legolas)
Rating: K
In peace we laid him, dark and fair, to journey on alone,
Upon his chest a broken sword beside a cloven horn.
Down at his feet the weapons of the enemies he slew
were strewn in great abundance for their numbers were not few.
A hero, he died for the chance that others would survive,
Those hobbits who had gained his love, who looked to him with pride.
For in his heart they saw a man, brave, gallant and so true
to all that he held dear, someone to call upon, they knew.
Proud warrior of Gondor, though they seek, they shall not see
his face again within those walls, nor hear him striding by.
The waters of great Anduin have carried him away,
O’er Rauros Falls and onward they did bear him out that day.
My heart was full as lifted up in song my voice did ring,
A sore lament was carried to the heavens on the wind
And with my boon companion, as his boat did disappear,
We sang of love and loss as if his people, they could hear.
As there we stood and bid to him a final, sad farewell
I swore his honor to uphold, his city should not fall,
My sword would ring in its defence, and ‘long as I survived
The white tree would remain in bloom, his line would stay alive.
O Boromir, fair Boromir, The tower guard will bide,
And ever northwards will they gaze ‘though you will ne’er arrive.
The city white will mourn your loss, until the end of time
For over seven streams you’ve sailed, o’er waters, deep and wide.
In peace we laid you Steward’s son, to journey on alone
Upon your chest your broken sword beside your cloven horn.
Down at your feet the weapons of the enemies you slew
Sleep brother for you’ve earned your rest, brave Boromir the true.
