Think of me
——————
"Farewell, Mir," the older one had said. "Farewell," he had answered. Boromir then had managed a smile," Take care of our city and yourself." Faramir had nodded. "Do not look so sad. It is for the best. This dream will no longer haunt you," his brother had continued. "Your stubborn as ever for insisting to go alone," the younger one had replied. "They need you," the Captain General had replied. "Think of me, little brother. Look out for me. If death won't claim me, I do return," Boromir then had said and with one last glance at Faramir, began his journey to Imraldis where the sword that was broken dwelled.
Faramir, prince of Ithilien, steward of the king, woke up. He saw him again. Boromir, his brother, once Captain General of Gondor, passed away and did not return. Could not. Valar claimed him. However, he dreamed of his beloved older brother often the past days. Today was the day when Boromir had left for Rivendell. Every year, since the age of Elessar, king of Gondor, this day became the one of remembrance of their friend and brother. Faramir carefully stood up, to not wake his wife. It was very early. The sun has not even risen yet. He put on clothes and left the room. Outside it was very silent. Not even birds were awake. He closed his eyes. Then the man heard a sound from his son's room. He opened his eyes and smiled. So, Elboron either read a book or dressed himself for secret training. Yes, Faramir was aware what his son did so he could play 'ranger' as the boy called it. He walked past the corner of their home and peered into the chamber of Elboron. Regularly, his son asked the man to reveal the secret of sneaking without being seen. One day, was always the answer. He regarded Elboron, who laid on the bed, immersed in a book. Faramir tiptoed behind his son and laid a hand on his left shoulder. His son did not move. However, the head of the boy turned to regard the man. "I knew you would be there," Elboron stated with a smile. How often has he, as a child told that the older brother? Every time when he collected him. Oh Boromir... It must be visible on his face. The sudden sadness. "Father?" his son asked in a worried voice. Faramir smiled at him and kissed his brow.
"Yes, Bo," the man answered.
"Is it today?" the boy countered. Elboron knew. Of course, he did. The father nodded and was embraced, "We manage." The prince ruffles through Elboron's hair.
"Would you join me for a walk or do you prefer to continue with your book?" Faramir asked. The book was laid aside and a pair of eyes found his. The man got up and went out, his son following him.
"My lord," Beregond greeted him.
He bowed his head in return, "Hopefully, I have not roused you."
The guard smiled, "Of course not, my lord." Then the soldier returned to his post.
"Father?" his son questionend.
"Yes, Bo," Faramir answered.
"Your bow?" he was reminded while the boy tilted his head. The prince smiled.
"Why would I need my bow?" he teased his son. Certainly, Elboron hoped for a lesson.
"We could practice together, father," his son responded. "I know mother is still asleep. I do volunteer to fetch it," Elboron continued, voicing the thoughts of Faramir. The father nodded and the boy was off. Yes, his son received this gift to read a man's mind. His father passed it on to him. A soft breeze ran through his hair. Ithilien woke up. Elboron returned but not alone. Éowyn, his wife followed after their son.
"You gave in again," she concluded and kissed him.
"He did not rouse you?" he replied.
"He did not, Mir," his wife responded. Mir, so he was called by his brother. Since he had given this name to his wife, he had been called that again. Elboron handed him the bow and Éowyn left to help with preparations for the journey to Minas Tirith. He kneeled down to let the boy climb his back. Something the man took over from Boromir. The prince stands up and departed for the training places. There the forest was not so dense. Elboron jumped down and looked expectantly at his father. Faramir walked to one target and tensed the bow. Then he gestured the boy to join him and kneeled to be level with his son. Elboron laid hands on his. They fired the arrow and it nearly hit the middle. The boy regarded him.
"I am proud of you, Bo. Well done," the prince declared causing Elboron to smile. Boromir as well had encouraged, him every day anew.
"Let us quit the practice for today father and walk a while as it was your wish," his son announced.
"You are wise and fair, my son," the prince answered with a smile. In his youth he was called that as well.
"I am not. Books are. And my father," the boy replied.
"You are right, books are wise indeed. Do you remember the wizard I told you about?" he countered.
Elboron nodded, "Of course I do. You mention him every second day." He had to pass the stories of friends and family along. The Steward feared otherwise they will be forgotten. Elboron embraced him. "Gandalf was one of the wisest wizards alive," the boy added. He laid his hands around his son.
"Do you want me to stop?" Faramir suggested but Elboron shook his head.
"No. You don't have to. It makes you happy. So, please don't stop," his son stated.
Again, Faramir kissed his brow, "I am glad to call you my son." Yes, he gave himself a promise to show affection towards his son, should the man ever have one and would give him the love his own father had never shown. A draught played with his hair. It was as wanted by Boromir.
Today, every year anew, it hurt most. To have lost him. To have lost Boromir. He will ever think of him.
Remember me
——————
"Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed."
Boromir's last words to him, sounded in his head when Elessar, High King of Arnor and Gondor, awoke in the early morning. Even now, he could not forget. Today, was a made a rememberance day for their bravest companion of the old Fellowship. Eldarion, his eldest, stood below in the throne room and regarded him. However, the boy did not speak. Arwen, his wife then entered with a smile. Father and son both returned it, whereas Aragorn welcomed her with a kiss. "My king, Lord Faramir has arrived," one guard informed him. The man nodded and followed him. Outside, a soft breeze played with his crown and around Andruil.
"Alas, Boromir, spirit which has not faded away, I am aware you test me," he mumbled. His friend did this often the past years. Eldarion smiled and the guard looked at him confused.
"He did this to me as well, my king," Faramir responded and bowed slightly before him. The prince had come with his wife and son, as every year. Their eyes met.
"You are late although you live only a few miles away," stated Gimli and clasped the hand of the recently arrived man. Elf and dwarf had already arrived yesterday.
"Says someone who feared to be late but was it in the end," countered Legolas and joined them.
"I was not," replied Gimli. Elboron, son of Faramir smiled and his offspring gestured the other boy to come with him.
"We should meet more often, I have missed your voice, Gimli and your face Legolas," declared Éowyn then she followed his wife inside. They were left alone.
"Could you stop to embarrass me in front of women?" the dwarf asked the elf. Legolas smiled in return. His steward has turned to the White Tree and Aragorn stopped next to him.
"I do say that every year but I wish he could see the tree bloom," admitted Faramir.
"He does. His spirit has decided to stay in the Halls of Mandos to keep watch over us," he replied.
"So, it is certain," concluded the prince and smiled faintly. "I know he is... there... but... I wish I could see him again," as to agree with him, one blossom of the tree lands on his head. Aragorn nodded in agreement and in return a leaf blew directly into his face. He knew immediately who could be held responsible: Boromir. "Brother, I beg you, show some manners," Faramir said aloud. Elessar's hand searched for it, removed the leaf and it flew away.
"Im onlui approve ha because ha na- cin (I only approve it because it is you)," he whispered using the Sindarin tongue. The younger man smiled faintly then it faded.
"Are there any duties left to be fulfilled by me, my lord?" the prince asked.
"Not today, my good steward," he answered and turned around to his two former companions and friends. They looked expectantly at him. Aragorn understood and lead them all inside. His guards stepped aside and smiled faintly when Faramir passed. This man had earned the trust and liking of all inhabitants of Gondor. So, Elessar granted him not only the title Prince of Ithilien but him and his descendants the legacy of stewardship as well. The younger man has not once disappointed him since. They entered the dining chamber. As it was tradition, his steward left and would join them later. Faramir would visit the rooms of his brother.
"How na- cuil at i court? (How is life at the court?)" asked Legolas as he did every year.
Aragorn nodded absently then answered, " Quiet a peaceful, yet ú- comparable with i bein taur in which im spent nin childhood. (Quiet and peaceful, yet not comparable with the fair woods in which I spent my childhood)" The elf nodded in return to signalize, he understood.
"Never will I forget the beauty of Lady Galadriel. Never will I forget Boromir, bravest companion of old," joined in Gimli.
"None of us, ever will," he agreed.
"We manage to muster a strong facade, his brother does not," added Legolas.
"The scars forged by the past will never leave his face completely as it is with us all," continued Elessar. A silence followed. Then Éowyn and his wife entered. Arwen took a seat next to him, the lady of Ithilien and Rohan on the opposite of the table.
"You were talking about Mir," the fair-haired woman concluded.
"Yes," agreed Aragorn.
The Lady of Ithilien smiled weakly, "He still grieves." All present nodded in agreement.
"As do I," Aragorn ensured.
Éowyn looks up," My brother, regent of Rohan, could not make it this time. I received his letter a few days prior."
Elessar viewed her," I have already been informed." Then all fell silent and waited for the rest of their family. No, they were not related but nevertheless a family. All of them. After a while Faramir returned carrying Elboron on his back. Éowyn smiled and the prince took a seat next to her after their son slid from his back. Eldarion followed behind and Aragorn knew from one glance in the boy's face what the father would do tomorrow. He would carry the son on his back. His steward viewed them all.
Then Gimli spoke up," Has my good elvish friend ever thought about what could have been, when we would have stayed with him."
Legolas nodded," It is one of the things in my life that I regret every year anew." Indeed, Valar did not look kindly on them that day. Not a day passed when Aragorn did not regret it to have sent Boromir alone after Merry and Pippin.
That day would be remembered forever. He will always remember his companion, his friend, his brother.
Live for me

"Think of me, little brother. Look out for me. If death won't claim me, I do return."
"Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed."
Words of farewell that he used for Faramir and Aragorn found the way to Boromir's thoughts. It was very quiet and he was alone. His spirit returned to the halls of Mandos after refusing access to his family's fields. It was an easy decision. Yes, the captain general will be doomed to stay here alone forever until even his spirit passed away, but he can keep an eye on his brother and friends. "Forgive me," he murmured, and Faramir turned his head. It was as when his brother heard him. If there was only one chance to hug him again, but all he can and will ever do is ruffle through his brother's hair with the help of the wind and test Aragorn's patience by guiding it around his old companion. Boromir used every opportunity to inform his brother of his presence or to assure the king that he was still there. Then his eyes wandered to Aragorn. The man has become king and has indeed fulfilled his request. He was glad. His people were in good hands. In the best.
The Gondorian heard sections of the lament sung for him. He would never have thought of earning the friendship of the community. Boromir had thought there was a gap between them and him. That he wouldn't be one of them. Perhaps it was the ring through which he betrayed Frodo that was to blame. On the verge of death and during his conversation with Aragorn, all the pain left him and he even managed a smile. Yes, he could not have asked for a better passing if not for his brother's absence. "Mir, I wish I could be with you," he thought aloud. However, this was not possible. At least he was allowed to look down on the younger one and encourage him to continue. To be as near as possible. To be still there. Boromir was happy to see his boy grow up. His brother was an excellent father. Elboron was good at watching over his little brother. "Live this life for me, brother mine. My dear Mir. Watch over Gondor, my good friend Aragorn. I will never leave you completely," he said, leading the wind through Faramir's hair one last time. “And Gimli, Legolas do regret nothing. Know I have forgiven you long ago,” he added with a smile. Then his spirit vanished.
Boromir knew that his people, friends, family would live on for him. And the Captain General, he would watch over them for all as long as he could.
