Between strangers, they can lead to hostility, between friends they can lead to quarrels. And it's so easy to misunderstand someone's words, actions or intentions...
Different races or cultures can be a source of misunderstandings as well, as a certain word or gesture can have a different meaning for them. Such misunderstanding can happen at the royal court of Gondor, for example, with the ambassadors from other lands, but also in the Shire while enjoying the hospitality of Hobbits: Bringing a present to a birthday party, instead of expecting to get it? Faux pas indeed!
