TITLE: Arwen's Lament RATING: K SUMMARY: Arwen comes to realise the truth behind her choice. A short poem.
Arwen’s Lament
Amongst these cold forbidding stones My heart flies from its breast I begged that you delay this hour Yet knew ‘twas for the best
Our son is grown and ready now To take the mantle on And I could see the weariness Writ in your ageing form
‘tis only now I come to see The truth so long denied That father tried to warn me of But in my pride decried
For truly did I not discern Just what my fate would be How I would linger here in pain Whilst your soul travelled free
I must away from where you lay Your cold, unmoving form Brings naught but sorrow now my love An anguished, biting storm.
This gift of freedom from the world Feels cruel and severe Yet I did choose it willingly My heart to yours adhered
And even now the time has come I would not change a thing Except perhaps to beg you stay For just another Spring.
But now our story is complete I too shall seek some rest Where fading mallorn still remain For I can not go west
So there in peace I will decline Until long life is through And memories begun to fade As mortal thoughts will do
Our names will pass to naught but myth As time wends on its way And fables only all those deeds Which kept Sauron at bay.
In time I know we will rejoin But until then my love I shall remain a broken shell Within forgotten grove
